My trip to Mexico was originally planned as an adventure in the Yucatan which would be coordinated around my presentation at the Society for Applied Anthropology Conference in Merida, a city in southern Mexico. Research quickly revealed a beautiful area with a rich cultural history. Mayan pyramids, small coastal towns on beautiful beaches and secluded cenotes were all just a few hours from the quaint city of Merida. However, an unfortunate accident which resulted in a broken leg and a dependency on crutches turned my Mexican adventure into a more low key experience. I still got to witness the beauty of Merida, though it was mostly via afternoons spent sitting in Plaza Mayor people watching. I was fortunate to encounter fiestas in the evenings which showcased different styles of music, dress and dancing. However, the greatest lesson I learned on this trip is that I'm more durable than I thought - even with hobbling down the narrow sidewalks of Merida in intense heat I was able to enjoy Mexico and all that I was able to experience.
